The Vision of E. Gene Smith
Gene Smith dedicated his life to ensuring that the precious texts of the Tibetan literary heritage are not lost, but are continually made available to all. He acted at critical times, with incredible ingenuity and forbearance, and saved countless manuscripts from obscurity or extinction. The impact of Gene’s work has rippled throughout the world.
The culminating project in Gene’s life was the creation of the Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center. With TBRC, Gene wanted to use digital technologies such as scanning systems, databases and the internet to extend his lifelong passion beyond the confines of ordinary libraries and printed books.
Gene wanted to engage the world, in a most intimate way, with the many wonders of Tibetan civilization through the use of digital technology.
- Gene envisioned four main activities for TBRC, which constitute the core of our work: seek out, preserve, organize and disseminate the vast treasury of Tibetan literature.
